arthritis pain relief while on blood thinners?
<< Osteo-arthritis and pain tolerance Does Dr. Frank's all natural pain relief really work? Is it safe to use for arthritis pain? >>
I have advanced osteoarthritis, stenosis, fibromyalgia, etc. and have recently been taken off all pain relievers. I will be on Coumadin the rest of my life. Right now my pain is 8 out of 10. I can’t function. Does anyone have a pain relief med. that doesn’t interfere with Coumadin? I’m desperate. Thanks for any help.
I may not take common pain killers because (1)they affect the efficacy of the Coumadin and (2) they make internal bleeding much more likely. Topical ointments give only mild relief.
I have been to a pain clinic in the past, but they have treated specific areas, like my lumbar spine.
I think I need a rheumatologist who understands the problem of balancing the Coumadin side effects with the right level of safe pain meds.
Is there anyone on Coumadin who has found such a combination?

If your pain level is an 8 out of 10, there is probably nothing over the counter that is going to help you. I would recommend that you find a doctor that specializes in pain management and get an appointment as fast as possible. Doctors that specialize in pain management can prescribe pain killing medication that will allow you to function and they will probably put you on a number of other medications that help reduce pain such as elavil (an anti-depressant), Lyrica (helps with fibromyalgia), etc. If properly managed, pain killers don’t zonk you out and you can have a life again.
It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you find a pain management doctor you are comfortable with. Unlike other types of doctors, you can’t change doctors easily once you become an established patient. I actually saw one pain doctor that told me pain killers don’t help people and he wouldn’t prescribe them. Needless to say, I left his office without any prescriptions and did not develop a doctor/patient relationship with him.
Lastly, there is a lot of information on-line and a number of books that have been written about living with and reducing the effect of chronic pain on your life. I recommend you start looking and reading right away.
There are a lot of medications and treatments out there that can help you. Hang in there and remember, although the pain may be bad right now it doesn’t have to be forever.
